Travel Medicine Q&A

At Beach Cities Medicine, we love to be part of your travel team! Not only do we get to live vicariously through your travel, but we also love to be a part of ensuring that your travel is as safe and healthy as possible. While elements such as politics, weather, and innumerable other variables always exist when traveling, we can help your odds on the medical front to help ensure you’re at your best to deal with whatever other challenges may come your way.

Taking time to review your itinerary in detail – preferably well in advance of your trip (though sometimes we have to do our best and adapt at the last minute) – will help us to identify vaccines that would be appropriate for your trip in time that your immune system can be ready to go when you are. Considering risks for common illnesses you may encounter there and advising you on medications to bring along with you to treat them can also save an otherwise ruined trip by preparedness. Talking through activities you plan to do on your trip can help us prepare you for factors such as altitude sickness, insect-borne diseases, or environmental conditions that you may encounter en route.  Additionally, Dr. Wallis is a certified provider for Yellow Fever vaccination and is able to provide that vaccine in-house.

Most of all, at Beach Cities Medicine – we’ve got your back. Wherever you are, you can call Dr. Wallis for guidance. While he may not be able to fly out and personally join you, he can help to evaluate your symptoms, diagnose your condition, and advise you on self-care and medications to get you back on your feet. Alternatively, should you be so unfortunate as to need to visit a hospital while traveling, Dr. Wallis can help to discuss your medical condition with your treating provider there and ensure that the teamwork we always endeavor to provide extends to wherever you are as well.

Dr. Wallis himself is an experienced traveler, having spent two summers living in Africa and having visited 40+ different countries and 45 states… and counting! Whether helping to care for professional athletes as they travel and keep them competition-ready or exploring the world with his family, Dr. Wallis knows what it’s like to engage the wonderful benefits of travel, as well as the challenges therein. He looks forward to helping his patients do likewise.
